I
grew up in Cos Cob, Connecticut just an hour or so from New
York City. In 1985, I earned a B.A. from Brandeis University
in Politics with a minor in Medieval Studies.
After I
graduated from Brandeis, I took a six-week trip backpacking
around Europe - my first big trip!
In 1988, I got a
M.A. in Computer Science from Boston University. Much of what
I learned in grad school is now obsolete. The web didn't even
exist then!
After grad school, I moved to the San
Francisco Bay area and took a job developing software for
Oracle.
After a mere eleven years with them, I took a leave of
absence to take my second big trip. I visited the South Pacific
and part of Asia.
Soon after my return to the U.S., I
took a job at Scient,
an eBusiness consulting company. While
there, I traveled on business to such interesting places as
Omaha, Nebraska.
After a year at Scient, I quit to go
traveling in Europe. While traveling, I had developed an
interest in Anthropology. Upon my return, I took two semesters
of Anthropology courses at the University of California,
Berkeley.
I spent the summer of 2001 in Alaska with my
girlfriend Susan, and starting in December 2001 we drove
across the United States from New Hampshire to California.
Never ones to do things the easy way, we took six months to
make the trip!
